The Young Diego Maradona

Cannes 2008: 'Maradona' - Premiere

Diego Maradona was destined for greatness in the field of football. Let me be specific with that. He was not that great outside of football, a life filled with controversy – drugs and producing illegitimate children.

Anyway, as a young boy Maradona was already showing greatness that would etched his name on the record books as one of FIFA Player of the Century, along with Pele.

At 15, he debuted for Argentina National Team against Hungary and won 5-1. Accumulated 34 goals in 91 matches for Argentina throughout his career.

Debuted as a professional footballer for Argentinos Juniors at age 15, ten days shy of becoming a fully 16 year old. He had 116 goals in 166 matches for Argentinos Juniors before being shipped to Boca Juniors.

Played his first game for Boca Juniors at age 20 against Talleres, he scored two goals in a 4-2 win.

In my opinion, at present a player that would come close to Maradona is the 19 year old English footballer Theo Walcott. But that would be on another topic.

Theo Walcott? HAHAHA! That guy is overrated! None of current English players can be compared with Diego Maradona. I hope Maradona will bring glory to Argentina in the next World Cup. Hopefully Argentina will meet England in the final.

  2. [...] only knew of the Aguero-Maradona connection after the Argentina versus Scotland friendly last week. Diego Maradona was preoccupied [...]
